Two titles for IIL in Unihockey

6 January 2017

Over the past month, IIL has had several teams participate in the annual ADISR Uni-hockey tournaments spread over four different categories. The main event took place on Friday 11th November at La Côte International school.

Benjamin Boys

The IIL Benjamin boys began the tournament with a match against ISL. The match began frantically with both teams struggling to settle and find a rhythm to their game. IIL eventually calmed and found a system that suited them, scoring two goals in quick succession courtesy of Alexander. The boys lead 2-0 at half time and continued their momentum into the second half scoring with ease a further four times to put the game beyond ISL and finishing 6-0 victors. La Côte 2nd’s team were up next, and the boys had to dig deep and grind out a result in close fought match which ended in 2-0 to IIL.

The boys were sitting comfortably on 4 points after two victories but knew it was important to continue the way they were playing and keep concentrated. In IIL’s 3rd match the boys were paired with Mont-Olivet school who were a relatively unknown outfit. Antony was in fine form as goalkeeper and managed to keep out early efforts on goal from the opposition. Alexander and Giorgio linked up superbly to create two well worked team goals. Ruben’s persistence paid off with some high pressure that resulted in Mont-Olivet’s defence making two vital mistakes, that he capitalised on with two well taken goals. IIL finished the match 4-0 winners.

With one game to go, IIL knew that they were one victory away from being crowned champions. The boys played some great hockey, moving the ball around nicely and working well as a unit. Alexander was unstoppable as he continued to score goal after goal with precision and power. IIL ended the match 6-0 victors meaning that they were the 2016 Benjamin boys champions.

Benjamin Girls

IIL Benjamin girls group only consisted of four teams so it meant that everyone played each other twice.

IIL came up against local rivals Florimont in their first match. It was a tight match with few chances for either side. Lucy and Carolina worked tirelessly to close down the opposition and keep Floirmont at bay. With a piece of individual skill, Carolina glided past two players and with the flick of her wrist, she unleashed an unstoppable effort into the goal. IIL defended their lead with determination, as Elsa was able to block every dangerous attack. The girls narrowly won 1-0.

The girls second match proved to be a less tense affair, as they found their feet and understanding of one another. The girls found the net twice and ended the match 2-0 winners. Next up came ENSR. The girls found it hard to break their opposition down and most of the play was in the centre of the rink, as both teams dispossessed each other on several occasions. IIL only managed one effort on goal that was comfortably saved by the opposition’s goalkeeper. The match ended frustratingly 0-0 but the girls were still standing in a strong position on 5 points before the second round of matches.

IIL played Florimont once more, and were superb throughout the whole match. The girls found the net on 3 occasions but Florimont were able to score a late consolation goal meaning the game finished 3-1 to IIL.

With two more games to go the girls were starting to believe they could replicate the boys success. The confidence was flowing throughout the whole team as the girls overcame their opposition 2-0 in a comfortable victory against ENSR.

In the girls final game,IIL played against La Côte once more. The girls dominated the match, keeping their opposition pegged back into their own half. IIL were unable to break the deadlock as they spurned several opportunities and hit the framework of the goal on two occasions. The match ended 0-0 but the result did not matter as the girls had a superior points tally meaning they were crowned 2016 Benjamin girls champions.
