IIL winners of International Maths Challenge for 3rd consecutive year

26 May 2016

At the end of April, IIL was invited to take part in the yearly team Maths challenge organised for international schools in Switzerland. This year, 20 teams took part in the competition held at the Collège Alpin International Beau Soleil in Villars, along with students from Geneva International School, Zurich International School, Institut Le Rosey, and Aiglon College, among others schools.

The following students were selected from the English and French Secondary sections:

  • Tanish – Y10
  • Najeeb Ahmed – Y10
  • Alexander – Y10
  • Daniel – Y11
  •
Daniel – Y11
  • Amy – Y11
  • Weizheng – 4e
  •
Juraj – 2e

The IIL team won first place for the 3rd consecutive year! As they have had three wins in a row, they even get to keep the trophy.

How come IIL students are so good at Maths? As well as having lessons with different Maths teachers during the year, they can go to Maths club twice a week, and follow an iTunes U course. These various approaches allow them to explore different and challenging Maths problems. What’s more, IIL students take part in a number of other Maths competitions during the year, namely the French Kangaroo, the UK Maths Challenge, with Senior, Intermediate, Junior and follow on rounds. All these serve to motivate and inspire the students and help them develop creative analytical skills, build perseverance and self-confidence.

Some IIL students are veterans of this competition like Tanish in Year 10, who has participated since he was in Year 7. Others like Jurai and Weizheng, were new to the competition this year. Previously, they had achieved very high levels in Maths competitions, reaching the top 10 in the French Kangaroo. Through their talent and hard work, Tanish and Jurai have been noticed by the Swiss Maths Olympiad organisers and they are currently training with the Swiss national Maths team.

For the students, the highlight of the competition apart from winning and the ceremony, believe it or not is…. the food at Beau Soleil! It’s so good that some of them are motivated to work really hard just to be able to have lunch at Beau Soleil.

Keep it up IIL, we’re looking forward to next year’s competition !
