IIL netball team crowned in Zürich

25 May 2016

On Friday the 22nd of April, IIL girls travelled to Zurich for an overnight stay before competing in the SGIS Category D netball tournament on Saturday hosted by the Inter-community School of Zurich. The girls were in great spirit despite a long bus ride from Geneva. After an early nights sleep and plenty of rest the girls were ready to compete, travelling to the Zukimon sports halle in Egg.

The girls started the competition brightly with some fantastic play moving the ball down the court quickly and running their opponents ragged. Some wonderful link up play between Darcey and Ciara in the final attacking third saw IIL defeat La Chataignerie International School with a resounding 20-7 scoreline. A great confidence booster with some important points on the board after their first match.

The girls were focused and ready to continue their strong start and repeat their first energetic performance against The International school of Lausanne. Katie and Tara proved to be instrumental in defence, shutting out every Lausanne attack. The girls proved too strong for their opponents once more with Ella (one of the youngest players at the tournament) putting in a fantastic performance. Between Emilia, Cara and Amanda the girls were able to rule the centre third with ease and suppling the IIL attack with a consistent supply of passes. IIL came out victors with another confident display and the final score reading 23-2.

IIL had already qualified due to their first two victories but were determined to win their final group match in order keep consistency strong within the team. IIL were paired against LGB in their last group outing. The girls expected a tough match against an experienced side who would not accept defeat easily. The first half of the game was a tense close encounter with both sides finding the net on several occasions. At half-time the score read 7-5 to IIL. The girls entered the changing rooms already exhausted but after a tough team talk the girls were pumped up for the second half.

The girls began strongly, with Tara and Katie once again making some valuable interceptions. IIL grew more confident with each pass and attack, eventually pulling away from LGB resulting in a 26-12 victory. The girls were thrilled with their performance and were in good shape for their match in the final.

Due to results and points gained, it proved to be another encounter with LGB in the final.

After a long team talk and intense warm up, the girls looked ready to compete once more in a bid to take the trophy home.

Un nouveau coaching et un intense échauffement mirent les joueuses sur orbite pour ramener le trophée à Lancy.

In the final, the girls were able to find some last energy and completely dominate the opposition off the court. The girls played a high tempo game and managed to push through despite suffering some muscular injuries. The final was a joy to watch as the girls worked tirelessly to break down LGB’s defence. Once the deadlock was broken, IIL were relentless and attacked time and time again. The game was far beyond LGB and at the final whistle the girls leapt with joy as they were crowned champions beating LGB 21-7.

A fully deserved title

Well done girls
