Discovering Mandarin and Chinese Culture

31 August 2026

At the Institut International de Lancy, students from Year 5 onwards can choose Mandarin as an optional subject. Mrs Bérengère Maurel, our Chinese teacher, guides them as they discover this rich and fascinating language.

Beyond language learning, the lessons offer a genuine immersion in Chinese culture. Exploring a language also means understanding the cultural context in which it is rooted. Throughout the lessons, students are introduced to calligraphy, crafts and traditions, as well as festivals and songs.

Spoken by more than a billion people worldwide, Mandarin is a valuable asset for the future. Mastering this language can open many doors, both academically and professionally, particularly in fields such as international trade, technology, education and international relations.

By developing their knowledge from a young age, pupils build a strong foundation on which to continue their learning throughout their school years.

If this language may seem complex at first, it is far from being inaccessible. With curiosity, practice and perseverance, anyone can gradually master Mandarin.
