Primary classes at IIL

Our FrenchEnglish and Bilingual sections welcome students aged 6 to 11. Our teaching approach combines the acquisition of knowledge with the development of individual and interpersonal skills, encouraging tolerance and openness to the world.

IIL Primary

The IIL Primary school provides an ideal environment for children to learn, play and grow. We welcome children aged 6 to 11 in three sections: French, English and Bilingual. At IIL, students join an international, multicultural and welcoming community of their peers, supervised by an equally diverse teaching staff.

Structured around an innovative and creative pedagogy across our three sections, our learning philosophy bridges the inside and outside of the classroom. We place equal emphasis on academic excellence and personal development, nurturing collaboration, critical thinking and other soft skills at every stage. We highly value technological literacy and give pupils the necessary tools and guidance to grow into responsible digital citizens. Outside the classroom, we encourage students to participate in a wide range of sporting, cultural and social events and activities.

IIL provides an ideal environment for education with bright, colourful classrooms and dedicated outdoor play areas. Two sports facilities, a well-stocked international library and our extensive S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) Lab provides space for our students to explore all manner of interests.

IIL’s French Primary section welcomes children from the age of 6 until they enter Secondary school.

The Primary school is based on an ambitious programme that goes beyond the official expectations of the French National Education system (Éducation nationale française) and gives each child the tools and methods to grow and learn.

Language learning is a priority throughout French primary school. All English classes are taught by English-speaking teachers. Students learn English starting in the first year and several lessons are taught in English for all students including Sports, Arts and Music.

Meet the Head of Section

At IIL, we believe that students forge the foundations of academic learning and social development in primary school. Our English Primary school welcomes students from around the world aged 6 to 11, integrating them into a community where personal achievement, collaboration and mutual respect are essential.

The school closely follows the National Curriculum of England programme of study for Key Stages 1 and 2. Students actively engage in a broad and balanced curriculum that combines academic learning with the development of soft skills. Digital literacy is a priority, with children learning how to effectively and responsibly use digital tools and software.

Our language policy aims to integrate French within the scope of this curriculum. In addition to French language classes, we teach subjects such as art, music and physical education in French to students in English Primary starting from year 2.

Meet the Head of Section

We have designed the IIL Bilingual section to nurture and challenge our young learners, aged 6 to 11, in an educational environment that promotes plurilingualism and cultural diversity.

Based on the British and French curricula, the Bilingual section takes a balanced and harmonised approach to learning in two languages. Students learn alternatively in French and English throughout the week and are fully immersed in a bilingual cultural environment. And once they attain sufficient proficiency in both languages, we introduce German in the last two years of primary school.

Meet the Head of Section

Digital Learning

Digital tools are an integral part of the learning process in Primary school. We equip classrooms with interactive screens where teachers and students can share content with the whole class. Each student receives an iPad and we guide them on its effective and responsible use throughout the student’s education. Students also learn coding and robotics and benefit from S.T.E.A.M. (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) activities combining technological, creative and academic skills.

Language policy

At IIL, we are passionate about languages and actively promote cross-cultural references and plurilingualism. Our Primary School Language Policy takes its inspiration from our rich international community and linguistic heritage. We have recently developed a new, inclusive language policy largely based on the CEFRL (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) objectives. provided in our Year 1 to Year 6 classes. Our curriculum builds on our students’ existing skills in order to reach proficiency and confidence in acquiring a second academic language by the end of primary schooling. Beginning with our IIL START programme, language teaching and learning focus on oral communication and interaction. Our primary students strengthen their oral and written language skills by following specific subjects – such as art, music and physical education – taught in their second academic language. Our students also use their languages while learning other skills and communicating with their peers in science and geography classes from year 3 (CE1/10ème). At the end of primary school, we integrate a third language, German, in the curriculum. 

KiVa

All IIL students take part in various KiVa activities. The class activities vary according to their age. Primary students learn to express their emotions and develop empathy through role playing and group discussions.

Creative Arts

At IIL, the creative arts are a fundamental part of a balanced and fulfilling education. At the primary level, we fully integrate art and music classes with the general curriculum. Our specialist teachers actively engage and inspire children to express their creativity and imagination. In art, we encourage children to explore and experiment with many different media and techniques, including painting, collage and modelling, as well as digital tools. Discovering a variety of artists and styles inspires the children and deepens their appreciation of different forms of art. 

In music, students acquire a love of music and develop their talent as musicians, increasing their self-confidence and creating a sense of achievement. Our students take pride in showcasing their creativity thanks to the exciting school productions that take place during the year.
