New to Geneva ?

Back
You are planning to relocate to Geneva but are not familiar with the city or Switzerland... Here are a few tips.
  • Description

School system

The most specific feature of the Swiss school system is that it is run on a cantonal rather than national level, with each canton overseeing its own system. Learning objectives are becoming more harmonised, though some issues such as the name of levels in the programme, conditions of admission, introduction of certain subjects, can still vary from one canton to another.

A private school, the Institut International de Lancy refers to the curricula of the Ministère de l’Education Nationale (France Ministry of National Education) in the French section, and to the National Curriculum of England, IGCSE and IB programmes in the English section. However, it is helpful to know how classes and programmes at IIL correspond to the Swiss school system, for instance when defining the age of entrance to school or university. IIL has established a grid outlining how the above correspond in the various systems.

As a member of the Geneva Association of Private Schools (AGEP), IIL cooperates with the Geneva Department of Education (Département de l’Instruction Publique du Canton de Genève - DIP) and informs parents about all matters of relevance as defined by local authorities. Details of the local education system and their link with private schools can be found on the DIP website.

Location

IIL is located in Grand-Lancy, a calm, leafy suburb close to the centre of Geneva. The campus is easily accessible by public transport and several buses and trams stop within a few hundred metres of the school gates. Access to the motorway is only a few minutes away. Our private school provides daily morning and afternoon school bus transport for students of all ages.

We do however, recommend that when choosing where to live you take into consideration your child's daily life at the school when choosing the location. We will be happy to provide advice on how to proceed.

IIL network

IIL parents' association (APEIIL) will be happy to help you with any questions on a practical level that you may have as parents.
