Elémentaire : 11e (CP) - 10e (CE1) - 9e (CE2) - 8e (CM1) - 7e (CM2)

Children of 40 nationalities follow the French Primary programme. The teaching language is French and non-French speakers are given extra lessons in French as a foreign language if needed. Lessons in English as a second language begin at Nursery level and continue through Primary, provided by the English language department attached to the French section.

Equivalences are determined for students coming from or transferring to an external system.

Students coming from the local Swiss system and from schools in the Canton of Geneva are accepted at our international school. They will be directed to the programme best adapted to their educational needs.

Access to State schools is possible. Students from IIL can transfer into the Swiss educational system and to schools in the Canton of Geneva. In this case, students are generally placed in the class corresponding to their age.

The French primary school curriculum

Classes take place on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 8:15 am until 3:20 pm and on Wednesday mornings from 8:15 am until 11:40 am. There are no classes at Primary level on Wednesday afternoons. After-school supervision is available for children every day from 3:20 pm until the school buses leave at 4:30 pm, and from 11:40 am to 12:40 am on Wednesdays.

Classes at elementary level are divided into two cycles, the first for students aged 7-10 to acquire the basic elementary skills, the second, for 11-12 year olds to consolidate these skills. Students gain autonomy and continue to acquire more specialized skills.

The curriculum is organised around seven core competencies:

  1. Language proficiency

  2. Mathematical and scientific literacy

  3. Humanistic culture

  4. Social skills

  5. Information technology proficiency

  6. Foreign language proficiency

  7. Physical Education

Each class is placed under the responsibility of a form teacher. Sport, Art and English are taught by specialists. A variety of teaching methods geared to individual needs are used in the classroom with the added support of new technologies (iPads, interactive whiteboards).
