The English Secondary section at IIL is a warm, nurturing environment, that provides an exemplary educational experience. The global outlook and open mindset of our students and staff is reflected by the international curricula that we follow. In lower secondary we base our educational programmes on the English National curriculum and Cambridge Secondary 1 programmes, leading to Cambridge IGCSE examinations. In upper secondary, all our students follow the full IB Diploma programme.

We are an English language medium section of one of the oldest private schools in Geneva. Our educational culture and ethos are very established and distinct to our school and we are proud of our position of prominence on the Swiss educational landscape. We continue to build on the strong foundations and strength of experience and that have lead to our our school’s success. We have grown considerably in numbers, whilst retaining the warm, nurturing environment that has contributed to our success. We pride ourselves on having high standards of behaviour anchored in traditional values, as well as fostering a strong work ethic, which encourages healthy competitiveness.

As well as our rigorous academic programmes, which focus on the acquisition and application of knowledge, we firmly believe that social and emotional skills will stand our students in good stead for what lies ahead. In fact, the link between social and emotional Learning and academic achievement cannot be denied. While we continue to value persistent effort and academic excellence, it is clearer than ever that twenty-first century transversal skills, and social and emotional intelligence will enable our students cope with the changes and challenges that they will inevitably face in their future studies, careers and personal lives.

In a world that continues to see considerable change, expecting the unexpected has become the norm. This is has reinforced our commitment in preparing our young people for their futures. For this reason, there is a renewed focus on social and emotion aspects of learning, through the Personal, Social & Health Education lessons and Digital Citizenship programmes, as well as in the traditional subject areas.

The English Secondary team of educators and I look forward to working with you in order to enable your children to develop both intellectually and socially - flourishing emotionally and surpassing their academic potential.

IGCSE teaching and learning

The teaching and learning approaches value education and focus on personal growth. 21st century skills are reinforced by a supportive school community aiming at intercultural understanding.

The learning environment benefits from outstanding modern facilities (year of construction : 2005) and advanced technology (1 to 1 iPads). It fosters a warm, nurturing and safe atmosphere, in order to facilitate the demanding academic goals of the IGCSE programme.

Languages are at the heart of the learning process, with a unique focus on English-French bilingual outcomes. A specific department coordinates the teaching of French as a foreign language. In addition to French, all students acquire a second foreign language (German or Spanish).

The teaching approach associates learning and innovation skills in order to foster creativity, critical thinking, problem solving, communication and collaboration. Differentiation guarantees individual attention through best practices such as small class sizes, adapted lessons for Mathematics, or supervised study hall with subject specialists.

In addition to languages (English, French, German, Spanish), eight subjects can be presented in the framework of the IGCSE exams : Mathematics, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, History, Geography, Art, Drama.
